Computer Hardware and Functions

Hardware (hardware) is a physical component that forms a single unit system Personal Computer (PC).

Usually these devices are assembled and most of them are inserted into a computer case and some are outside the case.

Computer Hardware and Functions

The hardware inside the case generally consists of:

Motherboards

Motherboards

Motherboard, or we are often familiar with the name mainboard, mobo, MB, or system board is the main component that builds a computer. The shape of a square board with slots for inserting other components. Its function is to connect all PC components. The other computer hardware are all attached directly to the motherboard slots or at least connected using cables.

Central Processing Unit

CPU (Central Processing Unit)

Ordinary CPU is also known as the “Processor” or “Brain” of the computer. The function of this CPU is to process and process all calculations and commands that make the computer operable. Due to the heat it generates, the CPU is always equipped with a fan as well as a heat sink to reduce its temperature. The latest types of CPUs are also equipped with a Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) which is integrated into the CPU, as a graphics data processor.

Random Access Memory

RAM (Random Access Memory)

Random Access Memory (RAM) RAM serves as a temporary data transit place for operations that are being executed by the CPU. RAM is volatile, meaning that this device does not store data permanently, only for needed operations. The RAM capacity on PCs that we often find is quite diverse, ranging from 256 MB (MegaBytes) – 16 GB (GigaBytes)

Video Graphic Array

VGA (Video Graphic Array)

VGA card or graphics card serves as a connector that allows the transmission of graphic data between the PC and display devices such as monitors or projectors. Most computers have a separate VGA as an expansion card installed in the motherboard slot. But there are also computers that have VGA integrated on the motherboard or on the CPU.

Hard Disk Drive

HDD (Hard Disk Drive)

Hard Disk The hard disk serves as the main data storage in a computer system. The Operating System, applications, and documents are stored on this hard disk. On the latest PCs, there is also a new piece of hardware called Solid State Drive (SSD). Functions the same as a hard disk, but offers faster data transfer speeds.

Hard Disk Drive

Optical Disc Drive

An optical drive is also known as a CD Drive, DVD Drive or ODD. The function of this device is to read and also store data from and to optical disc media such as CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray Disc.

Power Supply Unit

PSU (Power Supply Unit)

The power supply functions as a converter and distributor of electrical energy from source outlets (eg PLN electricity) to a form of electrical energy that can be used to run computer components inside the casing. Usually, this PSU is placed on the back of the case.

Apart from the computer hardware contained in the case, there are also components that we commonly see outside the case:

Monitor

Monitor

Also called screen or display. The function of the monitor screen is to display video and graphic information generated from the computer through a device called a graphics card (VGA Card). This monitor is physically similar to a television, it’s just that televisions are usually capable of displaying graphic information with a higher resolution size.

Keyboard and Mouse

Keyboard and Mouse

Keyboard and mouse function as input devices to enter text commands, characters, or move objects in a graphical interface for processing by the computer. The sizes and shapes of these two tools are quite diverse, but their function is the same.

Apart from the components mentioned above, there is also computer hardware that not all computers have:

Uninterruptible Power Supply

UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

Often referred to as a backup battery, the main function of a UPS is to store and provide backup electricity that will be used when the main power source goes out. Apart from being a power backup, most UPSs also function as a “stabilizer” that regulates the flow of electricity to match what is needed.

Printers and Scanners

Printers and Scanners

The printer functions as a means of printing output from electronic documents in the form of text and graphics. A home-based computer usually use paper as print media. While the function of a scanner is the opposite of a printer, which is to scan input data from outside the computer into an electronic form that can be processed digitally.

Speaker

The function of the speaker is as a means of outputting sound generated from the computer. In addition to speakers, we often find people who use headphones/headsets as a sound output device.

Sound Card (Sound Card)

Its function is as a liaison between the computer and audio output devices such as speakers

Modem

Modem

This tool serves to connect a computer to the internet

LAN Card

LAN Card

LAN Card or network card is a computer network hardware that serves to connect from one computer to another, between computers to printers, hubs, switches, routers and other devices through the ports on the LAN Card.
