### **Explanation of Block Surface Area Formula**

We can find the surface area of the cuboid by using the formula:

**Surface area of the block = 2 (length x width) + 2 (length x height) + 2 (width x height)**

**Surface area of the block = 2 pl + 2 pt + 2 lt**

**Surface area of the block = 2 (pl + pt + lt)**

**Example Question 1**

A block has a length of 20 cm, a width of 14 cm and a height of 10 cm. what is the surface area of the block?

**Solution:** is known:

p = 20

l = 14

t = 10

Block Surface Area = 2 (pl+pt+lt)

= 2 x (20×14) + (20×10) + (14 x 10)

= 2 x (280 + 200 + 140)

= 2 x 620

= 1240 cm^{2}

then the surface area of the block is 1240 cm^{2}

**Example Question 2**

If a block has a volume of 480 cm^{3} with the length and width of the sides 10 cm and 8 cm, respectively. So what is the height of the block? And what is the total surface area?

**Solution:** Is known:

Volume = 480 cm

^{3}P = 10

L = 8

To find the height of the block, let’s use the formula for the volume of the block:

V . beam = pxlxt

480 cm³= 10 x 8 xt

480 cm³= 80 t

t = 480 : 80

t = 6 cm

So the height of the block is 6 cm.

after knowing the height of the block, then we can find the surface area:

Surface area of the block = 2 (pl + pt + lt)

= 2 (10 x 8 + 10 x 6 + 8 x 6)

= 2 (80 + 60 + 48)

= 2 x 188

= 376 cm²

then the surface area of the block is 376 cm^{2}

**Example questions 3**

If the surface area of a cuboid is 202 cm^{3 }Find the width of the block if its length is 5 cm and its height is 2 cm.

**Solution:** Surface Area = 2 (5l + (5×2) + (2l)

202 cm

^{3}= 2 (10 + 7l)

202 cm

^{3}= 20 + 14l

202-20 = 14l

182 = 14l

l = 182/14

l = 13cm

then the width of the block is 13cm
